And it’s all aboard in 2025 for an incredible 9-month international festival celebrating the birth of the modern railway.

Kayak Beneath the Tyne Bridge
Venture onto the River Tyne for a unique perspective of the famous NewcastleGateshead Quayside. Award-winning CBK Adventure Co will take you on a guided tour with a difference as you paddle down the river in a kayak. Learn about the seven bridges that cross the river, whilst enjoying views of iconic buildings.
Discover Dark Skies
With some of the darkest skies in the country, on a clear night you can see thousands of stars and even the Milky Way. Experience the wonder of the night skies at Kielder and Grassholme Observatories. Go on a journey to the far reaches of the Universe, from under the dark skies of Northumberland and Durham.
Take a Step Back in Time
Explore the northern frontier of the mighty Roman Empire at Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which spans East to West of northern England. Follow in the footsteps of Romans as you discover spectacular landscapes, rare wildlife and the incredible Vindolanda fort and museum.
Feel the Power of Nature
High Force is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in England, plunging 21 metres into the gorge below for thousands of years. Experience the force of nature as you follow the woodland trail to the base of the waterfall and hear the roar of the water long before it comes into view.
A Magical Castle
With wizard training and archery, Alnwick Castle is a magical family day out. Enjoy a guided tour and discover the incredible interiors and artefacts housed within this breathtaking building.
Venture Underground
Experience life underground as you explore the Victorian tunnels beneath the bustling city of Newcastle on a guided tour. Listen out for the coal wagons heading for the Tyne. Learn how tough life was during World War Two as you listen for the air-raid warning, and hear stories of people who sought safety in the tunnels.
A Journey that Changed the World
S&DR200 is an exciting 9-month international festival, with a packed programme of exciting events that celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first journey on the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR), which transformed how the world traded, travelled, and communicated.
