Durham City - Family Fun

Start your journey back in time at Ushaw, Historic House, Chapels and Gardens, just a five-minute drive out of the city centre, where kids (and big kids alike) can lose themselves across the majestic 500 acre site. Or head to Durham University's Oriental Museum - the North of England's only museum devoted entirely to the art and archaeology of the great cultures of Northern Africa and Asia.

Kids looking to burn off some energy? Take a ten-minute stroll across the River Wear and up the hill to Wharton Park, where children can let off some steam exploring the park's many trails, play area and community garden, or enjoy the view of the historic city below from the Battery viewing area.

Wrap up warm and enjoy the breathtaking Durham Riverside Walk, a 3-mile circular with incredible views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. And at Durham University’s Botanic Garden explore different landscapes with something new to discover around every corner. Experience history from new heights as you take on the 325 steps to the top of Durham Cathedral’s Central Tower, where you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views across the city and beyond. Kids will love re-enacting their favourite wizarding scenes in the Cathedral’s cloisters, which were used in the first and second Harry Potter films as the backdrop for Hogwarts, or spotting where superheroes filmed Avengers: Endgame.

And go from seeing where movies were made, to watching the latest blockbusters on the big screen at the Odeon Luxe  or Gala Durham cinemas.
