West Auckland
County Durham
About
Located in County Durham, to the west of Bishop Auckland, the village of West Auckland is famous for several quirky reasons: it boasts one of the largest village greens in the country, lined with 17th and 18th century buildings; it proudly produced the first legendary football world cup winners; and, it was home to the one of the most ruthless serial killers in Britain-- Mary Ann Cotton.
Whilst West Auckland's origins are ambiguous, evidence from the history of St. Cuthbert suggests that the village dates back as far as the 11th century; the Boldon Book (1183) reveals that several serfs resided in West Auckland who belonged to the tenantry of the first of the Prince Bishops, Hugh de Puiset. Later, the separate community of 'St. Helen Auckland' evolved from the creation of a 13th century church in Auckland West which was dedicated to St. Helen.
