Fill up your Senses – Sights, Sounds and Flavours to Feed the Soul

Start: Baltic Square, Gateshead (via public bus, car or bike)

Route: Baltic Square – Gateshead Millennium Bridge – Newcastle Quayside – Side – Collingwood Street – Grey Street

End: Grey’s Monument, Grey Street, Newcastle

In a nutshell:

Five senses – can be tried and tested whilst enjoying exhibitions, tasty food and drink and specialist shopping at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. Climb its stamina-busting stairs to reach a viewing platform where photo opportunities galore of riverscape, bridges and buildings energise the soul.

Touch - the conical shape “Blacksmith’s Needle” sculpture on Newcastle Quayside and discover symbols representing the five senses. The unusual sixth layer represents the mysterious “sixth sense”.

Sound - During summer the Tyne Bridge becomes an inland nesting site for a colony of noisy kittiwakes. The evocative calls of these sea-loving gulls fill the air. Observe closely to see that both parents take equal share in chick-sitting duties.

Sight – The honey-coloured sandstone of Grey Street with its magnificent “Tyneside Classical” architecture is a visual delight. Grey’s Monument celebrates the achievement of Charles, 2^nd Earl Grey, the Prime Minister who steered the Great Reform Bill through Parliament in 1832.
