Route: Bishop Auckland Market Place – Auckland Deer Park/Deer Shelter – Jock’s Bridge – Hazel Bank plantation –Auckland Way Railway path – Belburn Wood – Vinovium Cottage – Binchester Roman fort

In a nutshell:

Steeped in heritage and surrounded by appealing countryside Bishop Auckland is a microcosm of Durham’s history. This is a time-travellers walk into the past beginning in the town’s historic Market Place and continuing through the wooded delights of Auckland Palace Deer Park.  

The Auckland Way Railway path is a nod to the importance of railways in a region known as the “Cradle of the Railways”. Built to initially move coal and then later people, the line closed more than 80 years ago and now provides traffic-free enjoyment of the countryside.   

What could the Latin name “Vinovia” possibly mean? Two thousand years ago the Romans found their ideal location to build a new fort guarding the Roman road of Dere Street. Exceptionally well preserved remains include two bath houses and a length of professionally constructed Roman road. Add in a hunt for the “Beast of Binchester” carving to complete this walk through time.
