About
There are many theatres to choose from in Newcastle and Gateshead where visitors can enjoy the thrill of live performance; each telling a different story. One such venue in the heart of Newcastle city centre is Tyne Theatre and Opera House which not only puts on a great show but is situated in a truly historic building with its own story to tell and forms part of Newcastle's must-see cultural hotspots. Tyne Theatre and Opera House celebrated five years as an independent venue in 2020
The Tyne Theatre & Opera House offers the best in entertainment and is known for being a go-to venue for world-class comedy - recent and upcoming acts include; James Acaster, Katherine Ryan, Sarah Millican, Joe Lycett, Dylan Moran, Ben Elton and Ed Byrne.
Musicians from every genre have also performed on the Tyne Theatre stage. From film-composer John Carpenter, to folk singer Seth Lakeman, blue-eyed soul star Paul Young to Bowie producer Tony Visconti – there’s something for everyone.
As well as comedy and music, the theatre hosts a diverse programme including ‘in conversation’ discussions, popular theatre shows and musicals, ballet and opera productions, as well as a variety of other events. The Newcastle theatre itself is a Grade 1 listed building rated in the top 4% of listed buildings by English Heritage and has been afforded a three star rating, the highest available, by the Theatres Trust, branded as "a very fine theatre of the highest theatrical and architectural quality".
The Grade 1 listed Theatre was built in 1867 by industrialist and politician Joseph Cowen who envisioned ‘a Theatre for everyone’ during a time of heavy industry when life was hard. The warmth, light and escapism of the Theatre answered a major need for working people. Over 150 years later, the Tyne Theatre & Opera House continues to hold Cowen’s vision of ‘a Theatre for everyone’ at the heart of their ethos.
Located in the centre of Newcastle, the Tyne Theatre & Opera House is easily accessible by the city's varied public transport systems. There is a choice of off-street parking nearby and a wealth of restaurants, shops, hotels and local amenities.
Tyne Theatre & Opera House Preservation Trust is the freehold owner of the theatre and they continue to work on refurbishing, restoring and preserving the Grade 1 Listed building – with a focus on the auditorium and Victorian stage machinery – to ensure it can be enjoyed by future generations. You can help support the Trust in keeping the theatre’s heritage alive simply by visiting to see a show. Keep an eye on the Tyne Theatre’s website for all upcoming listings.
