From the front are views of the original Sheriff’s Tower, where the town’s taxes were once collected. The interior has been transformed into a colourful haven, with clean lines and modern living, and to the rear there is a private lawn and terrace, perfect for children and dogs, or for soaking up the evening sun. This is such a peaceful retreat and yet it is only moments from Auckland Palace and all the other attractions.

Standing proudly at one end of a row of historic alms-houses is the original Sheriff’s Tower. Your cottage is one of these charming alms-houses, once a home for working people in Bishop Auckland. Today the interior has been newly refurbished with contemporary styling and zesty colours, ideal for families or two couples.

Beyond the back door is a terrace and enclosed lawned area where you can sit and take in another tower – this one the steel and glass structure of Auckland Tower itself, where visitors can climb to the upper levels to enjoy the splendid views of the town and the rolling countryside of County Durham beyond.

After an exhilarating day wandering the Faith Museum, the Spanish Gallery and Auckland Palace, this cottage is the perfect retreat to refresh and revive.
