Dog friendly places in Durham that locals love, and their four-legged friends too!
This bustling little market town is very dog-friendly. Here you’ll find many dog-friendly places to stay and quaint little cafes and restaurants to eat. Surrounding the town you’ll also find a range of walking trails leading off into the stunning Durham Dales countryside – making Barnard Castle a great dog-friendly day out or pit stop when exploring all the dales have to offer.
Beamish, The Living Museum of the North
Where else can you time travel with your favourite furry friend in tow? Well-behaved dogs can visit Beamish Museum for free. They are welcome to explore the museum’s extensive grounds and inside some of the fascinating historic buildings, including the Sun Inn Pub and 1820s Waggonway. Around the museum you’ll find water bowls and dog waste bags are available from the entrance building.
Chester-le-Street Riverside Park
The Riverside Park is a great place to explore with the whole family in tow. There’s lots of fun to be had for dogs and your little ones, with big wide accessible paths, riverside trails, woodland areas and a playground for the kids.
Dogs love Derwent Waterside Park, where you can follow the winding footpath along the banks of the vast Derwent Reservoir. All dogs must be kept on leads at all times. But if you want them to have a little lead-free time, head to the park’s 12-acre secured doggy field to let your four-legged friend run free.
Throughout the Durham Dales you’ll find mile upon mile of dog-friendly trails to explore, from woodland walks, to wild moorland hikes and amazing natural wonders like High and Low Force Waterfalls.
If your dog loves the beach, then the Durham Heritage Coast is the place to be. Along this 11-mile stretch of coast you’ll find many dog-friendly beaches to explore. All beaches are accessible for dogs and their owners all year round perfect for long relaxing beach walks and making a splash.
Hamsterley Forest is a delightful doggy day out, with 2000 hectares of sprawling forest to explore. The waymarked walking trails will take you and your furry friends right into the heart of the forest, where you’ll discover wonderful views and wildlife watching opportunities.
Well behaved dogs are welcome at Raby Castle grounds. Grab your walking boots and head out to explore the castle’s beautiful 200-acre deer park and 18th century walled gardens – dogs must be always kept on a lead during your visit. After your walk around the grounds, pop into the dog-friendly Stables Café where you can both grab some refreshments.
