Romantic Spots
Prebends Bridge
In the 18th Century Durham joined in the fashions of the day by creating a perfect romantic landscape along its riverbanks. Couples should visit Prebends Bridge - perfectly positioned to frame the classic view of Durham Cathedral and Castle.

Explore this colourful and dramatic landscape with its beaches, rugged cliffs and imposing headlands. A truly stunning location, the Heritage Coast is recognised internationally for its rare plants and wildlife - and the perfect place for a romantic stroll.
The Bowes Museum
A museum with its very own love story. The marriage of John Bowes and his French-born wife Josephine in the 19th Century resulted in them creating one of the most enduring legacies in north east England. Their joint passion for collecting art resulted in this stunning building.
Raby Castle
There's nothing more atmospheric than an ancient castle, and Teesdale in the Durham Dales is home to one of England's finest - a stunning medieval castle built by the Nevills and home to Lord Barnard's family since 1626. Explore the glorious rooms within or stroll through the picturesque grounds.
That Brief Encounter Moment
The romance of the railways can be found at Weardale Railway and the beautifully restored railway station at Stanhope. With period luggage piled high on the platform and brown paper parcels tied up with string, you may feel you have stepped into a scene from Brief Encounter.
Route 66
No, not the one in the USA - this is our A66 which during the day is a busy cross-Pennine route. Known as Stainmore Gap, the road climbs over the high heather moorland along the southern edge of the Durham Dales. Choose a clear night, park safely in a lay-by and switch off the engine - have you ever seen so many stars in your life!
Table For Two
Delicious food, a great atmosphere and candlelight is the perfect recipe for romance. Look out for the Taste Durham quality mark, awarded to some of Durham's best eateries in recognition of great food and excellent service.
High Force and Low Force Waterfalls
Nothing can quite match the magic of a waterfall. Visit Teesdale in the Durham Dales to experience some of England's finest - a pretty woodland walk from the Bowlees Visitor Centre leads you to the spectacular site of High Force, whilst further downstream is Low Force, a series of smaller but equally delightful waterfalls.
Hardwick Hall Country Park
An outstanding example of an 18th Century planned romantic landscape and fully restored in recent years to its former glory. Man-made but designed to look as natural as possible with carefully placed buildings and follies to draw the eye.
