Flora, Fauna and a Fortress
In Durham, historic castles and heritage attractions are intertwined with stunning flowers, ancient trees and an abundance of wildlife. From Durham City’s tranquil parks and gardens to the sweeping lawns and vast parkland in which medieval fortresses have stood for centuries. Indoors and out, whatever the season, there is something for everyone in Durham.
• Explore the magnificent Raby Castle, and get up close to nature in its stunning 200-acre deer park, where herds of red and fallow deer roam freely. Wander through the re-imagined walled gardens and tuck into delicious food and drink in the Vinery Café Restaurant, housed within a stylish recreation of the historic glass house that once stood in the same spot.
• Encounter weird and wonderful plants from around the world at Durham University’s Botanic Garden on the outskirts of Durham City. Wander along winding footpaths and discover the delights of the Alpine Garden, Winter Garden, Bamboo Grove, Woodland Garden, wildflower meadow and more.
• Relax and unwind in the wonderfully whimsical Crook Hall Gardens, a tranquil haven on the outskirts of Durham City. Walled gardens, colourful flowers, a full size maze, medieval hall and magnificent views of Durham Cathedral are just some of the delights in store.
• Escape to Wynyard Hall, where beauty, relaxation, and delicious treats await. Wander through the stunning gardens, bursting with seasonal blooms and serene pathways, perfect for a peaceful stroll. After soaking in the views, head to the cosy café for homemade delights, or head to the Farm Shop, brimming with artisan goodies, fresh produce, and unique gifts.
