The International Ferry Terminal in North Shields is the main sea link for the North of England from Europe.
The port offers daily crossings to and from Northern Europe and operates shuttle bus services from the terminal to Newcastle central station where you can use train or bus services to reach Durham. Or if you're driving its only a short 30 minute drive to reach the county.

By Rail: A dedicated DFDS shuttle service is available to all visitors arriving via the Port of Tyne and runs from the International Passenger Terminal to Newcastle Central Station. The journey takes around 30 minutes, costs £3.80 per person each way and can be booked in advance or paid on board.
From Newcastle Central Station visitors can travel to Durham City in approximately 15 minutes, with trains departing every 15 minutes.
By bus: Once arriving in Newcastle, regular bus services from Eldon Square let visitors enjoy some of Durham’s top attractions. For just £10.90 per day, the Explorer Ticket is a great way of discovering the county, with the purchase of a single ticket providing travel throughout the region on local bus services (Arriva North East, Go North East, Stagecoach North East & Cumbria services within the Carlisle city boundary, Travelsure), as well as the Tyne & Wear Metro and Shields Ferry.
