After helping at the scene of a fatal accident, Frances finds her life changed.

Frances works on the book pages of a Sunday newspaper. She is quiet and capable, but nobody takes much notice: her face is pressed to the window on the outside, looking in. Frances driving back from London, comes across an overturned car crumpled on the side of the road. The driver is Alys Kyte, and she waits until the ambulances arrive. Later, Alys’s famous family get in touch, Frances finds herself ushered for the first time into the world on the other side of the window. And she begins to wonder: what it will take to belong.
