What is the Black Grouse Lek?
The Black Grouse Lek is a rare and captivating mating ritual where male birds display an intricate dance at dawn, flashing their tail feathers and fluttering their wings to attract potential mates. This spectacle is a breath-taking sight, and unfortunately, it’s becoming increasingly rare. Here in Upper Teesdale, we’re proud to offer you a chance to witness this extraordinary natural event, where the grouse perform their remarkable courtship display in the wild.
Your Experience
Enjoy an unforgettable stay at the cosy High Force Hotel, set in the picturesque North Pennines. Your adventure begins with a comfortable dinner, bed, and breakfast package at the hotel, followed by a guided pre-dawn tour to witness the spectacular Lek. Accompanied by the Raby Estates Head Gamekeeper, you’ll venture into the early morning stillness to see the grouse in action. Afterward, return to the hotel for a delicious, locally-sourced breakfast by the fire, completing your experience with the perfect blend of nature and comfort.

Settle in at High Force Hotel, a Victorian gem nestled in the tranquil beauty of the North Pennines. Enjoy a hearty meal from our new Spring menu to fuel you for the early start ahead, before retreating to your room for a peaceful night’s rest.
Your Morning
In the early hours, set off with our expert gamekeeper to see the Black Grouse in their full glory. After this incredible experience, head back to High Force for a Teesdale breakfast, savouring the local flavours as you reflect on your unforgettable morning.
