About
Home to one of largest collections of historic rail vehicles in the world, Locomotion is pulling out all the stops to commemorate S&DR200.
The museum is located in Shildon, the cradle of the railways and the place where passengers boarded the wagons and carriage behind Locomotion No. 1 on that historic day in 1825.
A range of events and activities are taking place to mark the milestone, including Railway Firsts, an exhibition now open and showcasing well-known and unexpected stories that have shaped the railways and our history.
A statue of Robert Stephenson, who built Locomotion No. 1 with his father, George, is also on display at the museum this year. Other highlights will include a special Young Railway Photographer of The Year Exhibition; three line-ups of iconic locomotives and rail vehicles; a model railway show; talks and lectures aimed at railway enthusiasts; and themed family activities every weekend and throughout the school holidays. Entry is free.
