All aboard! Train-lovers of all ages will adore Locomotion in Shildon – the world’s first railway town. Home to one of the world’s largest collections of historic locomotives, this free museum lets you get up close with iconic steam engines and discover the incredible story of the railway’s impact on the world.

Join the celebrations in 2025 as we mark the 200th anniversary of the first journey on the Stockton and Darlington Railway – the world’s first passenger railway. Locomotion, and many other locations across Durham and Tees Valley will be hosting unmissable events, exhibitions and new art commissions as part of the S&DR200 Festival from March to November.
