At the top of Waddington Street, go through King's Lodge entrance archway (1) and following public footpath through Flass Vale Local Nature Reserve, keep walking ahead(you will go down one set of steps) until you exit the reserve. Walk along Flassburn Road and left at the T-Junction into Fieldhouse Lane and then left again into Springfield Park.
At the first bend in the road take footpath on your right (2); this takes you to A167, straight opposite Club Lane bridleway. Cross with care and follow bridleway until you reach gate which leads onto a farm track (3).
Turn right and follow down to bridge, past the ruins of Beaurepaire, and over River Browney. Continue across bridge and up track, then turn right onto Lanchester Valley railway path (4).
Continue along the railway path for approximately 1 mile then take the footpath on your right signed to Witton Gilbert (5).
Follow the field edge footpath (6) and cross the footbridge over the River Browney (7).
You will approach St Michael's Church from the south west. A steep land leads alongside the churchyard wall to the lychgate (8).
Turn right, down a farm lane, and at the foot of the hill turn left through a chicane barrier into the southern end of Witton Gilbert Dene (9).
Follow the path alongside Dene Burn and go through the barrier at the northern end (10).
Turn left and continue up the surfaced footpath, through a kissing gate (11).
Continue left to the lychgate and visit the church. Retrace your steps for the return journey until you reach the railway path (5).
Continue along railway path, enjoying the views of Beaurepaire to your left. Cross road, pass Aldin Grange Farm and at the ornate black waypost leave the railway path by turning left to Durham and follow bridleway. Cross River Browney and take footpath on immediate right. Follow riverside track to Quarry House Lane and A167. Cross A167 via footbridge, continue forward and turn right into St Monica Grove.
At T - junction turn right and follow signs to City Centre which will return you to Waddington Street.
This roue passes near to Finbarr's and Broom House Farm, both are Taste Durham quality assured establishments.
