Limekiln Gill is a Local Nature Reserve which is UK Woodland Assurance Scheme certified and a Special Area of Conservation within Durham Heritage Coast. Habitats include grassland, heathland and woodland. Link to walk
Coastal heathland is found here. This is an extremely rare habitat in the Durham area and it contains heather, gorse and bracken. The bankside below the heathland is made of Magnesian Limestone and only specific types of flowers grow on it, such as spotted orchid, field scabious, common rock rose and basil thyme.
From here, it is only a short walk to the beach where you can watch the waves and hear them crashing onto the shore.
**Route supplied by Durham County Council’s Countryside Service.**
