About
The South Durham Orbital is a 54 mile challenging cycle route taking in Durham City, Haswell, Newton Aycliffe, Shildon and Bishop Auckland using National Cycle Networks and railway paths as well as on-road sections. It is marked on the Durham County Council South Durham Cycle Map.
Continue east from NCN Route 14 in Haswell to join the southbound NCN Route 1. Cycle this railpath almost to Stockton then via Thorpe Thewles and Bishopton to Newton Aycliffe.
A choice of busier roads lead to Shildon and Newton Aycliffe after which the Bishop Auckland to Brandon Railway Path connects with NCN Route 14 to lead back into Durham City from the west.
Then follow NCN Route 14 through Durham City back over to Haswell.
This route passes near to the following Taste Durham establishments:
The Rose Tree Inn, Brambles Coffee Shop and Seven Stars Inn - Shincliffe, Gourmet Spot Restaurant, Finbarr's Restaurant, Filini Restaurant, Cafe Cenno and Oldfields Eating House - Durham City.
