Bishop Auckland’s Christmas Town Expands to 10 days of Magical Wonderland
23rd September 2024
Bishop Auckland, is fast becoming known as the "Christmas Capital of the North East" and is set to dazzle once again as Christmas Town 2024 returns, extending its festive magic to a full 10-day celebration.
From Friday, 29 November to Sunday, 8 December, the town’s historic market square will be transformed into a winter wonderland, delivering an unforgettable festive experience for visitors of all ages.
Due to popular demand features like giant tipi bars, ice rink, Santa’s Grotto and traditional Ferris wheel are rumoured to return as well as vibrant Christmas market stalls, and a jam-packed stage programme. Additionally, this year, organisers Baccanalia and Bridge Creative will be working closely with schools and nurseries to facilitate school trips and special activities.
The event has grown significantly in popularity, with last year’s extravaganza attracting over 35,000 visitors. In response to the overwhelmingly positive feedback, the 2024 event has been expanded to meet growing demand. Organisers are partnering with The Auckland Project, Bishop Auckland Town Council and the Newgate Centre to ensure that Christmas Town reaches across the town centre and is accessible to those from the surrounding areas.
Entry to Christmas Town is free, however some attractions are ticketed. For more information, updates and booking, visit our website or call 01388 540823.
"Christmas Town has turned into a year-round effort and we aim to draw even more visitors this year to enjoy a longer period of festive celebrations and community spirit. The event creates jobs for local disabled people, it boosts the economy, and it brings an incredible cultural experience to the town which attracts people from all over the UK!”
Ben Tinkler, Managing Director of Bridge Creative
“To be expecting upward of 60,000 visitors in our fourth year is a sensational achievement, and one Bishop Auckland should be proud of - it’s been a community effort to make the event what it’s become. With the other fantastic winter events in and around the town such as AGLOW, Christmas at the Palace and Santa Express we’re well on our way to claiming the title Christmas Capital of the UK!”
Thomas Wales, Managing Director of Baccanalia
Christmas Town continues to thrive thanks to the generous support of our principal partner, Bishop Auckland Town Council, as well as funding through sponsorship, advertising, and other grant funding.
